Midnight Mass
(2021 – netflix)
After The Haunting of Hill House, Mike Flanagan did it again and even surpassed the former with Midnight Mass, his somewhat underappreciated masterpiece. It’s more drama than horror but when the latter starts to unveil itself, it’s even more frightening and meaningful. I’ve never seen any series dealing with guilt and depression in a way so gloomy and sombre. It still gives me the chills. Basically, it’s about a small and isolated fishing island where weird things begin to happen. The two main driving forces are a new and charismatic but odd and mysterious priest with strong beliefs who takes over the congregation and the young man he soon encounters who’s coming out of prison and lost his faith after fatally hitting someone with his car. Community, religion, interpersonal bonds. Salt is being poured in every wound, everything is bleak, no one is protected. Death is around every corner. Oh boy, this is what I call a dark drama.
